Holy Thursday is celebrated at Cizhong Catholic Church, Diqing Prefecture, Yunnan, China. Mass combines chanting and the post-Vatican II liturgy. After the Chinese Revolution of 1949, priests were expelled from the church in 1951. Catholics continued to pray using the chants translated to Tibetan for them by foreign missionaries prior to the expulsion. In 2008, Fr. Yao came from Beijing to serve as the parish's first priest since 1951. This is only the eighth Holy Week the community has celebrated since the priest's return, and its elements — such as the washing of the feet — are clearly unfamiliar to many parishioners.
